While you may see the terms used interchangeably, there are differences between fragrance oils and essential oils. Both types of oils produce wonderfully aromatic candles and offer candle buyers much variety when it comes to choosing a candle scent. However, these two types of oils are unique unto themselves so it’s good to know the characteristics of each.

Fragrance oils are perfume oils. While some fragrance oil scents may contain all-natural oils, they are primarily synthetic in composition. Production of a synthetic scent comes about when chemists study a plant’s components and then reproduces those components artificially.

What’s great about fragrance oils is the endless variety of scents that result. Experimentation with different synthetic combinations yields many fine scents and scent combinations. Fragrance oils are great for producing pleasing berry and fruit scents, as these scents are not always obtainable naturally as essential oils. Fragrance oils are also long lasting and affordably priced.

Essential oils are natural chemicals that are the true essence of a plant. They are not oil-like as we often think of oil. They do not have a sticky, oily feel to them and are actually clearer in appearance. Some essential oils do have color to them. They come from the leaves, flowers, seeds, resin, stems, roots, and bark of botanicals. Essential oils are highly concentrated oils and are popular in aromatherapy. Extraction of essential oils from botanical sources takes place by one of four methods:

* Steam distillation, which uses heat to draw out essential oils; this is the most common method used today.
* Cold press extraction: This method removes oils from the skins of fruits without the damage heat can sometimes do.
* Chemical solvent extraction: This method uses solvents such as alcohol to extract harder to get essential oils.
* Effleurage method: This method involves odorless fats or oils absorbing the perfume of fresh flowers.

Essential oils and fragrance oils are similar in that they both provide wonderful scents for soy candles. Scent blends may contain some natural essential oil elements in combination with synthetic elements. Again, fragrance oils offer the opportunity to make many more scent types and combinations than pure essential oils.

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment using fragrant natural oils such as lemon, rose, lavender and peppermint. These oils are usually added to the bath or massaged into the skin. Now, aromatherapy has become more popular and is treated as a complementary medicinal system for the relief of pain, to ease tension, in skin care, and also to invigorate the entire body. In addition to the regular courses, one can partake of aromatherapy as home study. Aromatherapy correspondence courses are meant to give students an in-depth understanding of essential oils, their uses and therapeutic properties.

Each aromatherapy correspondence program follows a modular strategy that covers all aspects of aromatherapy, starting from introduction and going on to an advanced series. These programs help a person to become an experienced aromatherapy practitioner or adviser. Many institutes conduct specialized training in aromatherapy by correspondence. The correspondence programs ensure a solid ground for participants in the use of various natural oils and their combinations.

Aromatherapy home study consists of basic courses, certified courses for those who have basic knowledge in aromatherapy, short term massage courses for teaching hands, and diploma and graduate courses in aromatherapy. A certificate is issued on the successful completion of each course. For students of correspondence courses, these institutes provide adequate support throughout the course. Schooling at home allows you to schedule the program, learn at your own speed and get the level of knowledge you desire. You can communicate with instructors and the institute through email, phone, mail or fax. In addition, there are postgraduate aromatherapy programs. The seminars, tutorials, and workshops for these courses are organized in various parts of America and also in other countries. National and international certification courses are also available.

The Atwood Institute for Research and Education, the Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy, and the Northeast Holistic Center are popular training centers offering aromatherapy correspondence courses.

Correspondence Courses provides detailed information on Correspondence Courses, Army Correspondence Courses, Bible Correspondence Courses, College Correspondence Courses and more. Correspondence Courses is affiliated with Graduate Distance Learning Programs.

The term aromatherapy was first used in the 1920s by French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé. Gattefossé first discovered the potential healing powers of natural oils after catching his arm on fire one day in his lab. In his attempt to put out the fire, he thrust his arm into the nearest bin of liquid, which just happened to be lavender oil. The burn healed quickly without a scar.

Aromatherapy is commonly associated with alternative healing techniques. It is the process of using natural oils as a means to alter a person’s mood or health. There are three main branches of aromatherapy. The first is home aromatherapy, which is self-treatment with aromatherapy products. The second is clinical aromatherapy. Clinical aromatherapy is used as a pharmacological treatment in a clinical setting. The third branch is aromachology. Aromachology is the study of odors and their effects on the mind.

There are three common methods of aromatherapy use. The first is the use of oil as a scent. Commonly, aromatherapy oils used for this purpose are found in candle form. At the scent level, certain plant oils activate the limbic system and the emotional centers of the brain. Aromatherapy candles are believed to be beneficial in creating alternate emotions.

The second common method of aromatherapy use is as a topical treatment. When certain plant oils are applied to the skin, they activate thermal receptors and kill microbes and fungi. In many cases, natural oils are used to heal skin abrasions, just as Gattefossé used lavender oil to expedite the healing of his burn wounds.

The final common method of aromatherapy use is as an internal drug. For this purpose, natural oil medications must be prescribed. They are said to activate the immune system.

Aromatherapy, especially in the more developed countries of the world, is almost never used as the sole treatment for an ailment. Often, it is only used as a method of alternative medicine. However, many healthcare workers use aromatherapy techniques in combination with other more recognized treatments.

However, many individuals preach of the stress-relieving benefits of aromatherapy scents. In fact, aromatherapy is commonly used in spas as a method of relaxation. Skeptics argue that the benefits of aromatherapy treatments are supported with little scientific research.

Persons interested in using aromatherapy techniques as a means of stress reduction need to first understand what natural oils are effective in providing the emotional effect they desire. For example, honeysuckle oils are said to be relaxing and rejuvenating, perfect for stress reduction after a long week at work. Likewise, rose oils are said to create a romantic atmosphere.
